Markings on metals

Examination of stamped marks, serial numbers, engraving, stamping, laser markings, plates and other markings on metal products.

Examination of metal markings considers the marking together with the surface and traces of intervention. The legible number, application method and presence of signs of alteration are separate questions.

Subject of examination

  • Stamped marks, numbers, engraving and plates
  • Metal surface and coating
  • Traces of treatment in the marking area

Sample questions for the expert

  • Which markings and features of their application are accessible for examination?
  • Are there signs of removal, alteration or reapplication?
  • Which surface properties are significant for interpreting traces?
  • What additional materials are needed for comparison?

The final questions are formulated according to the objects and circumstances of the particular task.

What to prepare

  • An overall view of the product and close-up photographs with a scale
  • Information about the material, coating and repairs
  • Documents and reliable marking samples
  • The object itself in accordance with the agreed arrangements

How the examination is conducted

The application method, surface and relative positions of traces are assessed. The applicability of special methods and the need for intervention on the object are determined in advance.

Scope and limitations

Cleaning the surface yourself may destroy traces. Restoring the original marking is not possible in every case; a product's authenticity in legal terms is not determined by a number alone.

What the deliverable records

The findings describe the features identified and the limits of the answer concerning the application method or alteration of the marking.

Cost and terms

from RUB 50,000. The exact cost depends on the type of material, number of objects, questions and need for inspection, microscopy or laboratory work.
