Model identifier and individual product number
One object may bear a trade name, model, part number, product item code and individual factory number. These identifiers serve different purposes. Before comparing them with documents, it is important to establish the purpose of each identifier and its location on the product.
For a removable plate or tag, the substrate, attachment method and available signs of connection to the object are considered separately. A legible number on a separate plate does not itself confirm the origin of the whole product. Information on the casing, assemblies, packaging and in documentation is compared separately, preserving any discrepancies found.
What to submit for examination
- An overall view of the product showing the area to be examined.
- Legible photographs of all markings relevant to the assignment.
- Purchase, supply, repair or inventory documents stating the number.
- Available manufacturer information about the model and version.
- Information about replacement of assemblies, plates, casing or coating.
Copies of documents and photographs should be linked to the specific object. If a number appears only in correspondence or on the box, this limitation is stated when formulating the question. Matching the textual identifier and examining features of its application are separate verification tasks.
In the final answer, it is useful to see what was read directly, what was established by comparison and what information came from the documents submitted. This makes it possible to assess the limits of identification without promising to confirm a product's authenticity from one photograph or one numeric code.
